Go-Row! Indoors Program in Sportmag:

An accelerated introduction to rowing
Rowing in its outdoor form is one of the world's oldest and most popular sports. A prestigious national and regional sport in Europe and the United States, it is gaining a loyal following in Asia, highlighted by its increasing recognition at the SEA Games. Rowing is a uniquely well rounded sport in its training of all the major muscle groups of the body- legs, arms, back, abdominals and buttocks. In the United States, it is valued as a supreme calorie burner. Indoor Rowing is increasingly practiced as an effective substitute for traditional outdoor rowing, in the same manner that the treadmill has become a standard gym replacement for the outdoor track.

The urban version
Indoor-Rowing has evolved from a training routine to become a competitive sport by itself. The annual world championship is held in Boston, USA every February and national championships in almost every European country and worldwide each winter. For the majority of Singapore's urban dwellers, it is more accessible than its outdoor form.

Race Structure
The Go-Row Indoors! Boat Race uses the Concept II indoor rowing machine (the same standardized machine used in international competitions) to simulate actual water-racing. Participants are first taught the basics of using the rowing machine, and the race takes place in a relay format that allows teams to compete against one another. In every race, the competition format is customized to suit different team-sizes and time constraints. The machines are linked using a computer system that tracks the relative teams' performances, so the results are accurate and impartial.

Incentives for students to keep physically fit
The Go Row Indoors! Boat Race is crafted to introduce interesting, fun activities and games to keep students motivated and help them overcome the I-hate-exercise doldrums.

Go-Row Indoors! also provides valuable benefits that will enrich students' experiences. Positive values and characteristics such as discipline, perseverance, diligence, teamwork are all strongly connected with rowing. It is these great physical benefits and values of the sport that inspires us to propose Go-Row Indoors! to the schools. Our motivation is driven by our belief that:

  • the educational aspects of the sport are of fundamental importance in rowing
  • rowing encourages inter-racial understanding and co-operation
  • rowing is an ideal and beneficial lifetime sport for all to enjoy

Indoor rowing offers all the benefits of outdoor rowing but in the comfort of indoors. It is also inexpensive, safe and convenient. Go-Row Indoors! uses the Concept2 indoor rower that allows one to simulate the rowing motion (it is THE indoor rower used by Olympic rowers!). The Concept 2 indoor rower is the only piece of exercise equipment that has created a sport in its own right and is ideal for intra as well as inter-school competition. It enables all students and schools to compete on equal terms. It can also be used for team building and personal development and can be very motivational for students who have lost interest in main sports.

The Power of Rowing
Indoor Rowing has been proven to provide the following health benefits:

Weight control
Rowing is an effective calories-burning exercise as it uses upper body, lower body and core muscle groups thereby creating a large demand for calories.

Improved strength and endurance
In addition to being a terrific cardiovascular exercise, rowing will also build strength.

Healthy bones and muscles
Rowing helps to increase bone density. It is impact-free thus puts little strains on the joints.

Reduced anxiety and stress
The smooth rhythmic nature of the rowing motion makes the exercise more satisfying and even therapeutic. It also develops good kinesthetic co-ordination.

Increased confidence and self-esteem
An annual inter-school indoor rowing championship provides opportunities for students to don their school colours and represent their schools in a competitive sporting event.
